The Entrepreneurial Mindset by Thom Stimpel is a non-fiction guide for those who are about to embark on the journey of owning their own business. Stimpel zeroes in with a focus on the difficulty that not just some but most entrepreneurs have. The pitfalls and wrong turns are profound and so very common, highlighted by Stimpel with statistics, anecdotes, and real-life stories that show both the good, the bad, and the ugly. Over the course of six comprehensive chapters that have been written for reading in order, Stimpel covers a multitude of topics that include research and foundational responsibilities, all of the financial aspects, and implementing and moving forward for a successful run, among many other things.

The first thing that struck me as I read The Entrepreneurial Mindset is that Thom Stimpel has a commanding voice. This is not to be confused with a carnival barker or a late-night TV infomercial host, but as a fantastically knowledgeable friend who is willing to talk you through each stage of development over a cup of coffee. He doesn’t beat around the bush and doesn’t sugar coat. He is clear and encouraging, but also firm and sensible. The most interesting to me was the in-depth description of the different types of ownership and how important it is to select the right one. I had no idea how many variants of a legal entity there are and how choosing the wrong one could be a recipe for absolute disaster. This is not a long book but it does have a great deal of information and should be considered required reading for anyone thinking of taking the leap to business ownership or who already are and feel like they’re not where they should be or are even sinking under the whole experience.
